RENE SARAN'S TREE OF LIFE

BELMAS Vice-President Rene Saran achieves a momentous milestone this year and we welcome members of the Society for the Furtherance of Critical Philosophy (SFCP) for a joint celebration of Rene’s birthday on 15th June 2021 at 2pm BST. On June 3rd, BELMAS members joined Imm. Past Chair Rehana Shanks for a Happy Birthday sing-a-long that was recorded for Rene’s birthday. Members also shared reminisces on Rene and attendees to this event will be asked to do the same on 15th June.

As part of this event, signed copies of Rene’s book ‘Tree of Life’ will be available to delegates for free.

The book covers a period spanning much of the twentieth century and the early part of the twenty-first illuminating aspects of European history and politics. The chapters detail the author’s life, first as a child, growing up in the pre-Nazi period in Germany, then by emigration from Germany via Denmark to Britain. Even at the age of 12, Rene was aware of the rise of fascism when growing up in Berlin and both parents were politically very involved in fighting the Nazis. Rene acquired an international outlook during childhood from those who surrounded her in Berlin.

The book also covers other important aspects of the author’s life, including how she has lived in various political communities in both Germany and the U.K. As well as how she has stood up for others and been politically active, at both grass roots level working on political publications as well as being a Governor at two London schools.
